About us
Aristocrat Alpaca is owned by Ross Stevenson and Ralph Tait, your hosts on this site.
We began breeding alpacas in 2005 with just four alpacas. Our herd now numbers around 80, with over half of those being bred on our farm.
We are proud to belong to the Alpaca Association of New Zealand (AANZ), and we register all our animals on the NZ Alpaca Registry. Visit the AANZ website, where you can access the NZ Alpaca Registry and check out our herd (just enter our herd code 'NKG' to display all our alpacas). And while you're on the AANZ website, browse the wealth of other information about alpacas in NZ, including upcoming shows.
Every registered breeding herd has its own ‘family name’, which is prefixed to the name of each individual alpaca born into that herd. Our herd prefix is ‘ARISTOCRAT’; and that is also the branding we use for products (such as the fine alpaca yarn manufactured from the fleece of our own animals) associated with our herd.
While our brand name is ‘ARISTOCRAT’, we have chosen two NZ native tree names - Nikau & Kauri – and joined them together to form our company name, ‘Nikauri Gold Alpacas Limited’. Why ‘Gold’? That was inspired by our first and most handsome Suri stud male (Cedar House Gold Rush 2), who has a beautiful, flowing golden fleece; and we are gradually building up a small herd of mid-fawn coloured boys (our ‘Golden Boys’) to provide us with an ongoing resource for elite fleece products.
Many of our alpacas have won ribbons in the show ring – some of them as champions!
